I saw that Tally Hall bulletin too.
Since I have cable though, I was able to watch the FNMTV thing.
Basically, the nominees for the VMAs are going to be picked by voters on vma.mtv.com.
Each week, two categories are going to be opened for voting.
This week, Best Female Video and Best Male Video are what you can vote on.
The eight categories are Best Female Video, Best Male Video, Best Hip Hop Video, Best Pop Video, Best Dancing In A Video, Best New Artist, Best Rock Video, and Video Of The Year.
The categories will be opened in that order.

The artists/bands that are able to be nominated are not shown yet for the categories (except for the ones where you can vote already)
I'm assuming though that Tally Hall will be up for Best New Artist. They might be up for a few of the other categories, but either way you can't vote yet.

This Tally Hall community of fans has done wonders before. We DEFINITELY gotta step it up, now that we're dealing with a sheet-load of people and make sure they get voted on AS MUCH AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE. For the Good Day video...? You KNOW they deserve it!

Well... Voting Begins August 1 for Best New Artist. But we don't know if that's what category they're in yet.

Unfortunately, I can't for the life of me determine how to vote. I'm trying to vote on best female video now and all I can do is play the damned thing. No "voting" button anywhere. Unless they determine the winners by how many times they're played.... but I can't even seem to find that info.

I think it's a horrible idea to let the public decide the best videos of the year anyway.

Nope, you can vote, you just have to register an account on mtv and go to whatever category you want to vote for, then just click on the picture of the artist (above the word vote)

It doesn't tell you the current standings though, which is going to make this tough

I had a tough time voting too. Besides having to register on MTV.com I had to click on one of the artists and then go back before the "vote" button would appear.

I agree that they should show the number of votes each artist has so far. I guess since this is the first year where voters determine the nominees, they haven't perfected it yet.

Oh, and in case you weren't able to watch FNMTV, they said the nominees will be revealed the Friday after the voting is opened for each category.

Thanks for clearing all that up, guys.

It's still a horrible idea to allow the public to vote, though. All it does, then, is become a popularity contest and the videos are not judged on their artistic merit whatsoever.... rendering the need for creative music videos completely useless.
